Rehabilitation & Therapy

The Lawrence General Hospital Post-COVID Recovery Program caters to each patient’s individual needs. The program can help you establish a safe and gradual exercise program focused on strengthening, stretching, core stabilization, posture, and pain relief. As you progress and your endurance improves, your therapist will focus on exercises and activities to help you return to normal day-to-day life and recreational activities.

The program will take each patient through a supervised three-phase protocol:

  1. Phase 1 - The patient will go through a supervised set of custom exercises. Throughout this phase, clinicians look at their response to the activities using what’s called a Rate of Perceived Exertion Scale (RPE). Clinicians try to maintain a stable RPE, putting rest periods in place if it increases too quickly. Symptom stabilization is the key. Constant vital monitoring is also the norm in Phase 1. You’ll not only be trained on self-monitoring but also energy pacing and breathing techniques. Fatigue – a major issue that PACS patients face— will also be tackled in this phase.

  2. Phase 2 - In Phase 2, patients progress to graded aerobic exercises. At this point, there’s a continued effort on stabilizing symptoms and increasing aerobic load. Clinicians will also keep monitoring vitals as well as fatigue and exertion. This phase typically lasts about eight weeks but could be longer depending on the patient’s response to the exercises.

  3. Phase 3 - At this phase, the program’s therapists start introducing graded submaximal aerobic training. They use peak exercise capacity and heart rate zone to measure progress, with the goal of enhancing overall aerobic capacity and strength. While therapists may set individual benchmarks, the patient should be able to alternate aerobic training days with strength-training days at this point.

Boston

Boston Children's Hospital Post-COVID Clinic
Main Campus, 300 Longwood Avenue Boston, MA 02115

Pediatric Multidisciplinary Long-Term Recovery

Formed in March 2021, the Boston Children’s Hospital Post-COVID Clinic offers evaluation and referral to specialty care for kids and teens with post-COVID symptoms. While some families contact the clinic directly, others are referred by their pediatrician or other health care provider. After an initial screening with an infectious disease clinician — often in the form of a virtual visit — they are then connected with the appropriate team of subspecialists to treat their symptoms. For example, a patient who is experiencing shortness of breath might be referred to Pulmonology, while a child with chronic muscle pain would be seen by clinicians in the Pain Treatment Center. Because many kids experience multiple post-COVID symptoms, a multidisciplinary team approach is key.

Brigham and Women’s Hospital COVID Recovery Center
The Lung Center, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, 75 Francis Street, Boston, MA 02115

Multidisciplinary Long-Term Recovery

Brigham and Women’s Hospital has launched a new, multidisciplinary COVID Recovery Center for patients who’ve recovered from COVID-19 infection but still experience lingering symptoms or complications from COVID treatment. The center provides a centralized location to evaluate post-COVID symptoms and coordinate care to help patients achieve the best possible recovery.

Patients may have a spectrum of symptoms that require evaluation from a variety of specialists. Each patient first undergoes a comprehensive pulmonary (lung) evaluation. A patient navigator then arranges additional imaging, testing and/or referrals to medical, surgical, neurologic and psychiatric specialists as needed for efficient and timely coordination of care. Our team partners with primary care providers to ensure patients receive follow-up care tailored to their needs.

Knowing COVID-19 may affect multiple organ systems, the Center’s multidisciplinary team consists of experts working together from various specialties. Each patient’s team may include health care providers from:

  1. Infectious disease

  2. Cardiology (heart and vascular)

  3. Pulmonology and Thoracic surgery (lung)

  4. Nephrology (kidney)

  5. Neurology (brain and nervous system)

  6. Otolaryngology (ear, nose and throat)

  7. Psychiatry or Social work (mental health)

  8. Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (physiatry)

  9. Outpatient Rehabilitation Services (physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech)

Patients must have a previous documented positive COVID PCR test or positive serology. Patients do not need to be an existing Brigham patient to receive care. Patients may be experiencing one or more long-term effects, including:

  1. Brain fog

  2. Cough or shortness of breath

  3. Exertional fatigue

  4. Fibrosis of the lungs

  5. Headaches

  6. Heart or blood vessel damage

  7. Loss of taste or smell, or other related changes in these senses

  8. Mental health conditions, including anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)

  9. Complications related to COVID treatment, including airway complications that may require specialized medical or surgical evaluation and therapies
